About TRIST / Introduction

TRIST is a Phase III clinical trial of Oxford BioMedica’s therapeutic cancer vaccine, TroVax®, in kidney (renal) cancer.

TroVax works by encouraging patients’ immune systems to launch a response against a protein that is found on the surface of solid cancers, including kidney cancers, but is not found on healthy cells. This immune response enables the body to identify and kill the cancer cells.

The TRIST trial has now completed recruitment of over 700 patients from 120 centres in 10 countries, across the EU, Eastern Europe and the USA. Final results from the trial are expected in 2009.

Oxford BioMedica is also testing TroVax in further indications including colorectal cancer and prostate cancer. International patient recruitment is expected to begin for two Phase III trials in colorectal cancer in 2008. These trials are being sponsored by QUASAR and sanofi-aventis and will involve the recruitment of a further approx. 4500 patients. Please see Other TroVax Clinical Trials for more details on these planned trials.

On 11th July 2008 Oxford BioMedica (LSE: OXB) announced that the independent Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) for the Phase III TRIST study of TroVax in renal cancer has recommended that the trial should continue but that further vaccinations be discontinued. Following its fourth interim review of the TRIST study, the DSMB advised that TroVax administered according to the protocol will not meet the predefined primary efficacy endpoint, but there is important scientific merit and more to be learned by additional follow up of all patients.
